While the effect on the planet may be exaggerated
to be instantly recognizable from a space view…
I imagine the planet to be stripped clean of
biological matter and not literally consumed whole.
Seemed already dangerous enough for our
small heroes.

“too* small and harmless”. Sorry, but seriously.
That can “seriously” happen when you’re in a hurry and forget to double-check. Thanks, edited!
So these bugs are Space Locusts?
Tyranids.
I despise the reflex need to compare new with old…. But, sometimes the New is so goddamn identical to the old it just makes you grin a little. Yes AA. Tyranids. (Pretty much identical in behavior to how they’re described in the old codex, right down to the enormous hive ships that fling spores from orbit.)
Go Squats Go!! (That too old a reference?)
Not at all. Given they eventually retconned the Squats out of existance within 40K by saying the Tyrannids ate them, I’d say that Beardy Bastards is actually depicting it’s own AU version of that exact event…
Hah! I did not know that the nids ate them! I only played during one version of 40k, and never again since.
All the same though, I’m really enjoying these comics.
“Space locusts” is indeed a perfect description for them.
Awesome page, guys!
Hail Galactus, devourer of worlds!
Space Dwarves, I love it! I’ve got to say though, I’m actually surprised the “space locusts” made it thus far, and in so great of numbers. Usually dwarves have more complex traps and defense systems then that. Mebbe the space dwarves got lazy?
Love the comic, either way, so keep up the good work!
This panel reminds me of that scene from “serenity” when the firefly drifts through the reapers fleet. I love it when s/f breathes the silence of space, no rocket burner growling, no gunfire/laser noise, no collision “bang”, just objects moving and the play of shadows and lights!
bugspray anyone?
Certain doom… but beautifully illustrated! Great page!
Woooo… I just had a thought. Psion buuuugs.. The leadership caste, a hive brain..
You lovely chaps have the opportunity to produce a brain-bug that will put starship troopers (movie) and 40k to shame! Woooo… I’m so excited for the future strips.
((Pleeeeeease! Dont squander it!!! I LOVE the idea of horrific telepathic insectoid aliens, just have yet to see it produced masterfully in any given medium. If people disagree, feel free to enlighten me. I’ve missed out on many comics and such in the last ten years))
I think it is safe to say the bugs are not psionic, or at least they are very weak or very specific psionics. If they were they were not they would sense the minds inside the ship and attack. I personally would not want them to be any signficant psionic abilities. These poor dwarves are already facing a deadily enough threat. In fact if the bug’s social structure is based on hard science then they are likely communicating and keeping order via pheremones, sounds, and light. If the dwarves can design devices to bust up their communications, then they might actually stand a chance.
I was thinking along the lines of biological networking type psionics. Something more vast and instinctual than telepathy. Across the gulf of space there’ll be no pheromones, sound or mandible wiggling.
Plus, tiny little bug managing to find the crucial part of an engine stinks of higher intelligence playing remote control.
Thank you for clarifying what was happening on the planet. But I do have a question, Are the lights on the planet being made by the aliens or coming from dwarven population centers/structures?
